Format: NES, Jap: 1990, US: N/A, Cart Size: 4mbit

Released in Japan in 1990, and again not in the west. It did really well in Japan, even though by this time the SNES had been released. This is by far the best of the NES incarnations, and sets the mould for game design in later episodes.

Story:
Four light warriors have been chosen to save the world. The wind crystal grants them with abilities to fight an ancient long contained evil which is seeking to escape and lay waste to the world (again!).

Game System:
The character classes system of FF1 has now evolved into the excellent 'job' system that was later implemented into FFV. The crystals grant extra abilities at various points in the game, resulting in about 20 different classes. Strangely, the initial basic class is called 'Onionkid'. You can change the jobs of the party at any point in the game, thus enabling you to customise the party to suit the environment. Characters gain skill levels in their particular job, for example, a knight will cover allies once he reaches a certain skill level.

This opens up a whole new depth of gameplay and strategy that some feel was lacking in some of the later titles in the series, especially Final Fantasy VII where the characters aren't really distinguished from eachother

Can I play it?
The original NES cartridge wouldn't be much use unless you can read japanese.
Luckily, a hacked version of the ROM is available: in other words somebody has gone through the game code and has translated all the japanese text, a very painstaking process.
To load the ROM on you computer, you just need a NES emulator like NESticle.
