Format: NES, Jap: 1988, US: N/A, Cart Size: 2mbit
Released
in 1988 in Japan, Final Fantasy II was never released in
the west. This is because the gameplay and graphics are
almost identical to the original, and Square believed that
westerners just weren't interested in RPG's (an attitude
that has only just recently changed).
Although similar overall, the
battle sequences are much improved from FF1's tiny windows.
Chocobos made their first appearance, and spells like Ultima,
Meteor, Toad and Mini were introduced into the series.
Story:
As in other FF titles, this tells a tale of a battle against
an almighty evil.
An oppressive emperor who has turned to dark magic to summon
evil monsters is threatening to engulf the land. Only the
four chosen light warriors: Frionel, Maria, Guy and Leonhart
can stand in his way.
Game
System: FFII shares many spells and items with its predecessor,
but it also introduces many new things to the series, like
the Magic Points system for casting spells. It's also more
interactive, the fourth character varies and you can learn
keywords from people, which could then be used to gain items
or spells. Also there are no experience levels, instead you
gain skill levels for each weapon or magic depending on how
much you use them. For exmple, if one of your characters suffers
severe HP losses in a battle, he/she will gain a higher maximum
HP. Early in the game, it's possible to raise your partys
HP levels considerably just by getting your characters to
attack eachother. However, FFII is probably the toughest of
all the Final Fantasy games, and it will take a lot of patience
and perseverance to see it through to the end.

Can
I play it? The original NES cartridge wouldn't be much
use unless you can read japanese.
Luckily, a hacked version of the ROM is available: in other
words somebody has gone through the game code and has translated
all the japanese text, a very painstaking process.
To load the ROM on you computer, you just need a NES emulator
like NESticle.
